Gas Fireplace Won’t Stay Lit? Thermocouple and Thermopile Basics

You hold the knob, the pilot lights, you let go — and it dies. Or it runs fine for ten minutes and then quits on its own. This is the single most common gas fireplace complaint we hear once the weather turns, and the cause is almost always one of two small parts that cost far less than people expect.

Here is what is actually happening inside the firebox, what you can safely check yourself, and where the line is between a homeowner fix and a call to a technician.

Why a pilot that will not stay lit is a safety feature working

A standing-pilot gas fireplace will not let gas flow unless it can prove there is a flame to burn it. That proof comes from a thermocouple or a thermopile — a small metal probe sitting in the pilot flame that generates a tiny electrical current from heat alone. When the current drops, the gas valve closes. So a fireplace that shuts itself off is not failing in the dangerous direction. It is refusing to release unburned gas into your living room, which is exactly what it should do.

That also means the fix is usually about restoring the signal, not about the gas supply.

Thermocouple vs. thermopile

A thermocouple is the thinner probe. It generates roughly 25–30 millivolts and does one job: hold the pilot valve open. If yours is weak, the pilot dies the moment you release the control knob.

A thermopile is the thicker probe, generating around 350–750 millivolts. It powers the main burner valve. If the thermopile is weak, the pilot stays lit fine but the main burner will not come on, or it lights and then drops out after a few minutes as the millivolt reading sags.

Which symptom you have tells you which part is tired. Both wear out — they sit in a flame for years — and both are replaceable parts, not a reason to replace the fireplace.

What you can check yourself

  1. Look at the pilot flame. It should be blue, steady, and wrapping the top half-inch of the probe. A weak yellow flame, or one that dances away from the probe, will not generate enough current.
  2. Check for a dirty pilot orifice. Dust, pet hair, and spider webbing are the usual culprits after a summer of sitting idle. That soft yellow flame is often just a clogged orifice.
  3. Confirm the gas valve knob is fully in the ON position and the wall switch or remote batteries are good. A dead remote receiver battery mimics a failed thermopile surprisingly well.
  4. Make sure the glass front is seated properly. Some sealed units will not stay running with the glass loose.

If the flame looks right and it still will not hold, the probe or the valve is the issue — and that is where a homeowner should stop. Anything involving the gas valve, the millivolt reading, or the burner assembly belongs to someone with a manometer and a multimeter.

When the gas valve itself is the problem

Sometimes the probes test fine and the valve still will not hold. Gas valves fail internally with age; the coil weakens and no longer responds to a perfectly healthy millivolt signal. Replacing a gas valve is a controlled job that ends with a leak test on every joint — never a guess-and-check repair. If your unit is more than fifteen years old and it has become unpredictable, this is often the answer.

Probes degrade gradually and often cross the threshold after a summer idle, when dust and webbing have also collected in the pilot orifice. A weak flame plus an aged probe is enough to fail.

Does a gas fireplace still need its chimney or vent checked?

Yes. Direct-vent and B-vent systems both need the venting inspected for blockage, corrosion, and separation. A blocked vent is a carbon monoxide risk regardless of fuel.

How long do thermocouples and thermopiles usually last?

Commonly several years to a decade, depending on how much the unit runs and how clean the pilot flame stays. A soot-fouled flame shortens that considerably.
