Many homes have a screen or a mesh guard over the outside dryer vent, put there to keep birds and mice out. It is a reasonable idea, but on a dryer exhaust it causes a problem: lint catches on the mesh, builds into a mat, and slowly chokes the vent. In Romeoville, where fall brings birds looking for warm openings and mice moving indoors, homeowners are often torn between keeping critters out and keeping the dryer venting properly. You can do both, but not with a fine screen.

Why screens and dryer vents do not mix
A dryer exhaust carries warm, damp air full of lint that gets past the lint trap, and any mesh at the outlet will catch it. The lint sticks to the wires, damp air makes it cling, and within a few months the openings close up. Model building codes generally prohibit screens on dryer exhaust terminations for exactly this reason, and dryer installation instructions commonly say the same.
What a clogged guard does to the dryer
When the outlet is restricted, air backs up through the whole run. Clothes take two or three cycles to dry, the laundry room gets humid, and the dryer runs hotter than it should. Lint then collects further back in the duct, where it is harder to see and where heat can reach it.
Signs your vent guard is the problem
Go outside while the dryer is running. You should feel a strong, steady stream of warm air at the hood and see the flaps open fully.
- Weak or barely noticeable airflow at the outside hood.
- A gray or white fuzz visible on the mesh or around the hood edges.
- Flaps that stay shut or only flutter while the dryer runs.
- Loads that come out damp after a full cycle.
- A hot, musty laundry room, or a burning smell during drying.
If you see any of these, turn the dryer off and clear the outlet before running another load.
Keeping animals out the right way
The better approach is a hood designed for dryer exhaust, not a screen added to a standard hood.
Gravity flap or louvered hoods
These close when the dryer stops and open under airflow. A hood with a good flap keeps most birds and rodents out without any mesh for lint to cling to.
Hoods with a wide-spaced guard
Some hoods have a guard with openings large enough that lint passes through freely. They still need to be checked every few months, but they do not mat over the way a fine screen does.
Elevated or roof terminations
Vents that end on a roof or high on a wall need a cap made for dryer exhaust. A standard roof vent or a screened plumbing-style cap is not a substitute.
What to do if something already got in
Scratching or chirping behind the laundry wall, bits of nesting material at the hood, or a sudden drop in airflow in spring or fall can mean a nest inside the duct. Do not run the dryer until it is cleared. Twigs and grass mixed with lint are a serious fire risk, and pushing them further in makes the job harder. We remove the blockage, clean the full run, check the transition duct behind the dryer, and fit a proper hood so it does not happen again. Our dryer vent cleaning service page explains what a full cleaning includes.
Dryer vent care for Romeoville homes
Pull the lint screen after every load, look at the outside hood once a season, and have the full run cleaned about once a year, sooner for large families or long runs. If your vent currently has a screen on it, remove it and replace the hood; do not just clean the screen and put it back.
We serve homeowners throughout our Romeoville service area for dryer vents as well as chimneys. The price is given up front, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. We are insured and bonded and have been at this for 29 years. Call (815) 305-5510, seven days a week from 7 AM to 7 PM.
Frequently asked questions about dryer vent guards and critters
Should I put a screen over my dryer vent?
No. Lint catches on the mesh and blocks the outlet within months. Use a hood designed for dryer exhaust with a flap instead.
How do I keep birds out of my dryer vent without a screen?
A dryer hood with a gravity flap or louvers closes when the dryer is off and keeps most birds and rodents out without trapping lint.
How can I tell if my dryer vent guard is clogged?
Run the dryer and check outside. Weak airflow, flaps that barely open, and visible lint on the guard all point to a restriction.
Can a clogged vent guard cause a dryer fire?
It raises the risk. A blocked outlet makes the dryer run hotter and lets lint build up further back in the duct, where heat can reach it.
What should I do if I hear an animal in the dryer vent?
Stop using the dryer and have the vent cleared. Running it can push nesting material further in and create a fire hazard.
How often should the outside dryer vent hood be checked?
Look at it at least once a season, and more often in spring and fall when birds are nesting.
Can you replace my dryer vent hood?
Yes. After cleaning the vent run, we can fit a proper dryer exhaust hood so critters stay out and lint can leave freely.
How often should the full dryer vent be cleaned?
About once a year for most households, and sooner for large families, long vent runs, or if drying times start to stretch.
