Most people think about dryer vents in terms of the lint inside them. That matters, but in Naperville I find just as many problems caused by where the duct ends as by what is packed inside it. A vent that terminates in the wrong place will clog again a few months after any cleaning, because the termination is the thing creating the clog. Fix the endpoint and the maintenance interval stretches back out to normal.
The four terminations we find most often
Venting into an attic, a crawlspace, a garage, or a soffit are the four we run into repeatedly, and all four are wrong for the same underlying reason: a dryer moves roughly a gallon of water per load as vapor, plus fine lint. Dumping that anywhere inside the building envelope means the moisture condenses on cold framing and the lint settles where nobody will ever see it.
Soffit venting deserves its own warning because it looks legitimate. The duct runs up a wall cavity and exits through a vented soffit panel under the eave. The trouble is that a soffit is designed to pull air into the attic. The exhaust gets drawn straight back up into the attic space, and the lint plasters the underside of the roof deck. If you have ever seen a gray fuzzy coating on attic sheathing above a laundry room, that is what caused it.
Roof terminations and why they clog first
Venting through the roof is legal and sometimes unavoidable in a two-story Naperville home with an interior laundry room, but it is the hardest configuration to keep clear. The run is long, it is vertical, and lint that does not make it all the way out falls back down and collects at the bottom of the riser. Roof caps also tend to be the ones nobody inspects, so a damaged flapper or a nest built by birds can sit up there for years.
If your laundry is on the second floor and vents up, plan on cleaning more often than the once-a-year rule of thumb, and have the cap itself checked rather than just the duct.
What a correct termination looks like
The endpoint should exit through an exterior wall or roof to open air, with a hood that has a swinging damper flap and no screen. Screens look sensible and are the single most common cause of rapid clogging — lint catches on the mesh, builds a mat, and the flap stops opening. Appliance makers say to leave them off for exactly that reason.
The hood should sit at least a few feet away from any air intake, window, or soffit vent, and high enough above grade that snow does not bury it in January. It should be visibly clear of siding, mulch, and shrubs. And it should be rigid or smooth metal duct all the way to the wall, never the white plastic or thin foil flex that some older installs still use.
How to check yours in five minutes
Run the dryer on a warm cycle and walk outside to the vent hood. You should feel strong, steady air and see the flap standing open. Weak flow, a flap that barely lifts, or lint visibly packed around the opening all point to a restriction. Then go back inside: if the laundry room is unusually warm or damp during a cycle, or clothes finish hot but not dry, the exhaust is not getting out. A duct that runs a long way with several elbows behaves like a much longer duct, so a 20-foot run with four turns can perform worse than a 30-foot straight shot.
Why this matters more than it sounds
Restricted dryer exhaust is a fire risk, and it is also a slow tax on the appliance. Longer cycles mean more run hours on the motor and heating element, and the trapped heat shortens the life of both. The moisture side causes its own damage: framing that stays damp in a cold attic invites rot and mold, and none of that shows up until it is expensive.

Frequently asked questions about dryer vent terminations
Can a dryer vent into the garage?
No. The exhaust carries moisture and fine lint, and in an attached garage it also risks pushing that air back into the house. The duct needs to terminate outside to open air.
Is soffit venting for a dryer ever acceptable?
It is a poor choice in almost every case. Soffits are intake points for attic ventilation, so the exhaust gets pulled back into the attic along with the lint. A wall or roof termination is the correct approach.
Should there be a screen on the dryer vent hood?
No. Screens trap lint and choke the airflow within months. The hood should have a swinging damper flap and nothing else across the opening.
How long can a dryer duct run?
The limit depends on the appliance maker and the number of bends, because each elbow counts as several extra feet of equivalent length. If your run is long or turns often, the practical answer is that it needs cleaning more frequently.
Why is my dryer taking two cycles to dry a load?
Restricted airflow is the usual reason, and the restriction is often at the far end rather than near the machine. A blocked flap, a crushed section behind the wall, or a lint mat at the termination all produce that symptom.
Does a vent cleaning fix a bad termination?
It clears the immediate blockage, but if the endpoint is the cause the duct will load up again quickly. We point out termination problems during the visit so you can decide whether to reroute it.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for a typical household with a short exterior run. Larger families, long runs, roof terminations, and homes that dry bedding frequently should plan on more often.
Can I clean the vent myself?
You can safely pull the lint trap housing and vacuum the first few feet, and you should. Full-length cleaning needs a rotary brush that reaches the whole run, and the termination itself usually requires getting to the exterior hood.
