There is a particular smell that arrives the first time the furnace runs in the fall — hot dust, faintly scorched, filling the house for the first ten or fifteen minutes. Most of it is dust burning off the heat exchanger and it passes. The part that does not pass is what has been sitting in the duct system since spring, and the beginning of the heating season is when it gets redistributed through every room.
What accumulates over a summer
Ductwork is a closed loop that moves the same air around the house repeatedly, and everything the filter misses settles somewhere in it. Over a cooling season that means dust, fibers, pet dander, pollen tracked in through open doors, and drywall or construction dust in any home that has had work done.
The return side takes the worst of it. Returns pull air from the living space toward the air handler, they usually operate under negative pressure, and any gap in a return duct running through a basement, crawlspace, or wall cavity draws in whatever is around it. That is why returns are consistently dirtier than supplies.
Humidity is the aggravating factor here. Northern Illinois summers run humid, and dust that stays damp behaves differently from dust that stays dry — it packs, adheres, and in the wrong conditions supports microbial growth on the surfaces it sits on.
Why the switchover matters
The cooling and heating seasons use the same ducts differently. Air conditioning runs long cycles with dehumidification at the coil; heating runs hotter, drier air through the identical passages, and the change in temperature and moisture lifts settled material back into circulation.
That is what the first-run smell partly is, and it is why the transition is the natural point to have the system cleaned. Doing it before the furnace runs regularly means the heating season starts with clean passages rather than distributing eight months of accumulation into every room in the house.
Who actually benefits
Duct cleaning is worth doing when there is a reason, and it is worth being honest that it is not a universal annual requirement. The clear cases are visible dust discharging from supply registers, a household member with asthma or allergies whose symptoms track with the system running, evidence of rodents or insects in the ductwork, visible mold growth on duct surfaces, and any home that has been through renovation.
The other strong case is a recent purchase. You have no idea how the previous owners lived, whether they had pets, or when the system was last cleaned, and the ducts are one of the few parts of a house you cannot inspect by walking through it.
What a proper cleaning involves
The method that works uses negative pressure with mechanical agitation. A high-powered vacuum is connected to the system to put the ductwork under suction so nothing escapes into the house, then brushes and compressed-air tools dislodge material from the duct walls and it is drawn out.
Supplies, returns, and the main trunk lines all get done, along with the plenum. Cleaning only the registers you can see and skipping the trunk leaves most of the material exactly where it was. What it will not do
Duct cleaning does not fix a duct-design problem, an oversized system, or rooms that never get warm. Those are airflow and sizing issues, and moving dust out of the ducts does not change the balance of the system.
It also is not a substitute for filtration. A correctly rated filter changed on schedule prevents far more accumulation than periodic cleaning removes, and a cleaned system with a neglected filter is dirty again quickly. Be skeptical of anyone recommending chemical treatments or sealants sprayed into ductwork as a default add-on.

There is no fixed universal interval, and reputable guidance treats it as condition-based rather than calendar-based. Anyone insisting on a rigid annual schedule for every home is selling rather than assessing.
Will duct cleaning help my allergies?
It can when the ducts are genuinely contaminated and the symptoms follow system operation. It is not a treatment for allergies generally, and it will not outperform good filtration and humidity control. Think of it as removing a specific source rather than as a remedy.
What is the right time of year to do it?
The transition between cooling and heating seasons is a practical choice, because the system is about to start running differently through the same passages. Early fall also means it is done before the furnace begins circulating whatever settled over the summer.
How long does it take?
Most single-family homes take a few hours, depending on the number of registers, the layout of the trunk lines, and how accessible the air handler is. Multiple zones or a large home take longer.
Should sealants or chemicals be applied inside the ducts?
Be cautious. Sprayed-in chemical treatments and duct sealants are not routine parts of a cleaning, and applying them inside a system you breathe from deserves specific justification. A straightforward mechanical cleaning with proper containment is the standard service.

Can I do it myself with a shop vacuum?
You can clean the registers and the first accessible foot or two, which is worthwhile. The trunk lines and the far runs need negative pressure and mechanical agitation to clear, and without containment a shop vacuum tends to move material into the room rather than out of the system.
