When a dryer starts needing two cycles for one load, the assumption is usually that the machine is wearing out. Sometimes it is. Far more often the dryer is working exactly as designed and simply cannot push its exhaust out of the house fast enough, and the reason has less to do with lint than with how far that air has to travel and how many times it has to turn.
Why vent length is the hidden variable
A dryer removes water by moving heated air through the drum and blowing the moisture outside. The blower has a fixed amount of push, and every foot of duct and every bend spends some of it.
This is why two identical dryers can perform completely differently in two houses. A laundry room on an outside wall with a four-foot run has an easy job. The material problem
Flexible foil and plastic accordion duct is the single most common cause of a chronically slow dryer. The ribbed interior catches lint at every corrugation, and the material sags between supports, creating low spots where lint and condensed moisture collect together.
Rigid metal duct with as few joints as possible is what performs. Where flexibility is genuinely required at the machine, semi-rigid aluminum is the appropriate compromise. Plastic or vinyl duct should not be in the path at all.
Reading the symptoms
Two cycles for a normal load is the headline symptom, but it usually arrives with company. The laundry room gets noticeably hot and humid while the dryer runs, which means exhaust is backing into the room rather than leaving it. The clothes come out hot but still damp, because heat is reaching them and moisture is not leaving. The dryer’s own casing runs hot to the touch.
Outside, the vent hood tells you a great deal. With the dryer running you should feel a strong, steady discharge of warm air. A weak trickle, a hood flap that barely lifts, or lint visibly packed around the louvers all point at the same conclusion. A hood that stays shut while the dryer runs is not venting.
Why this is a safety item, not a convenience item
A restricted vent traps heat and accumulates a fine, dry, highly combustible material directly in the hot air path. That is the mechanism behind dryer fires, and it is why the vent is treated as maintenance rather than optional.
Gas dryers add a second concern. A blocked exhaust can push combustion byproducts, including carbon monoxide, back into the house instead of outside. Working CO alarms on every level are not negotiable in a home with any gas appliance.
